Jared Kouchner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, confirmed on Friday that he is close to finalising some major real estate agreements in Albania and Serbia.
Kouchner's company, Affinity Partners, is in advanced talks with the two Balkan countries for investments in tourist properties worth over $1 billion.
Kouchner, who was senior official at the White House, said in an interview for Bloomberg News that his Miami-based firm aims to turn Albania's largest island, Saban, into the Mediterranean Sea, into a luxury destination for tourists.
In Albania, it also aims to build several hotels and hundreds of villas on Zvrinec Island, a coastal area in Vlora, south of Albania.
We're very excited. We haven't finalised these agreements yet, so we may not happen, but we are working hard and we are very close to”, Kouchner said.
In Serbia, it aims to turn three abandoned residential blocks into the centre of the capital Belgrade into a luxury hotel, commercial space and more than 1,500 residences.
Kouchner's plans in the Balkans seem to have been made in part through relations created during the time that Trump was president.
He said he has been working on these agreements with Richard Grenelli, who served as a special envoy of the United States for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, and briefly as task manager of national intelligence duty in Donald Trump's time.
American newspaper New York TimesThe first project in Albania and Serbia includes land controlled by respective governments, meaning it will have to finalise agreements with foreign governments.
Grenelli established valuable ties as far as he was in the US government, including some that seem to have made way for the Kouchner's investment team in the Balkans, according to the American newspaper.
Kouchner and Ivanka Trump visited Albania twice since Trump left the White House.
They travelled there together with Grenelli and even met with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Kouchner served as senior adviser to the White House and after leaving work, he founded the firm Affinity, which has assets worth $3.1 billion.
His firm is supported by Middle Eastern investors who enjoy state support, including about $2 billion from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund.
His firm also intends to invest in renewable energy, data centres and artificial intelligence. /Radio Free Europe
