Within the major rotation of the European Union's diplomatic posts around the world, Miroslav Lajcak, currently the bloc's special envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, is expected to become the EU ambassador to Switzerland.
Free Europe Radio Learns From Diplomatic Sources that Lajcak will launch the mandate in the Swiss capital, Bern, on 1 September this year.
The same sources told the REL that the current EU ambassador to Estonia, Aivo Ora, has been chosen to be the new chief of the European bloc's office in Kosovo. This post also has the rank of EU special representative.
It is still not known who will replace Lajcak in the post of special envoy for dialogue on normalisation of reports between Kosovo and Serbia.
Four years ago, former foreign minister of Slovakia Lajcak was nominated to the post. His mandate ends in late August.
European sources said the post of special representative for dialogue would be established later, following the rotation of a large number of EU ambassadors around the world.
It should also be decided how the EU will approach the future dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. However, there will be efforts in the EU to establish this before September 1st so that there will be no emptiness after Lajcak's departure. But that depends on the approach EU high representative will have for foreign policy and security, which will follow in the post, Josep Borrell.
However, who will be the new chief of European diplomacy and what will be the approach to the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, which the EU has been mediating since 2011, will be deployed after the June European elections, of which the new composition of the European Commission will be resolved.
The same sources told REL that the current EU ambassador to Estonia, Aivo Orav, has been chosen to be the new chief of the European bloc's office in Kosovo. This post also has the rank of EU special representative.
When confirmed officially, Orav will replace current Ambassador Thomas Szunyog in Pristina.
The future chief of the EU office in Kosovo has experience in the Western Balkans region, as he earlier served as chief of the European bloc's delegation in northern Macedonia and Montenegro.
Under the changes, Italian diplomat Louis Sorca is expected to become chief of the EU delegation to Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Italian diplomat has been the bloc's ambassador to Albania.
