EP Vice President: European Commission unilaterally imposed sanctions on Kosovo alone, contradictory signal

The 2024 European elections will set the course for a variety of things. Of course, for the future of the European Union, it is just there that some questions remain unanswered. For example, should EU enlargement continue despite all reserves for governments and heads of state such as Aleksandar Vuchic of [...]
Recently, Bravaria Prime Minister Markus Soder (CSU) paid a visit to Serbian nationalist Vuciq. And he made a very clear statement: the strongest place in the Western Balkans, the East Gate, must not be left to the influence of Russia or China”.
The German newspaper has spoken with EU Parliament Deputy Speaker Katarina Barley (SPD), who warned of the dangers and imbalances of enlargement ) and politicalist Vedran G mendic also chose clear words. His fear is that the European Union could bring another Orban case into the alliance.
Putin and China are approaching the Balkans, but Barley warns the EU: “compromies will fall at our feet”
“compromses between the EU and the authorities eventually fall on our feet”, Barley said. EU enlargement is “an opportunity to promote peace, freedom and prosperity in Europe”. However, the precondition is to meet all criteria related to democracy and rule of law. Barley appealed: “There should be no shortcuts here”
If such cuts are still in the air -- negotiations on Serbia's EU accession are under way. However, Barley witnessed to the Ursula EU Commission von der Leyen on each other.
“in the dispute between Serbia and Kosovo, for example, the Commission ruled unilateral sanctions on Kosovo alone last September. In doing so, he is sending conflicting signals”, the SPD politician rebuked.
Serbia's Vuciqi concern: Is the EU bringing a second case on board?
Experts Gihli avoid highly diplomatic formulas. “The EU must take clearer action against the authoritarian trend, set red lines, and also communicate more severely”, he requested in an interview for the FRde. That's also worth “when Wuchi steals the” elections.
“In an ideal world, closing eyes on this should stop, because it will explode in the face of the EU as a boomerang. See Victor Orban in Hungary”, he said.
So far, the EU's political focus has clearly been on the goal of enlargement. However, even a monetary package such as the six billion-euro economic support plan does not bring the desired results. “Turns out this doesn't necessarily work”, Jisic said. On the contrary, there is a “depressive state” concerning the EU.
The incoming polytologist gave a rather gloomy view of the situation in Serbia or in Serb-dominated areas like Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is a very strong <x0%s with Russia, in all aspects”, Gisic explained: “The authoritarian style of government, offensive actions against political opponents. Russia is viewed as one of the closest allies in these” regions.
Anti-Western and Anti-Sided Attitudes - EU is just as popular as “EU and American; Right-wing nationalist positions are the usual “” in many countries in the Balkans.
The EU needs “to clearly express the problem”: Soder visit is causing trouble for Serbia as well
In operation, a “stabilocracy” leading to “compromising with autocrats” is a real risk. Instead, Brussels must co-operate more closely with alternative political forces, with environmental or electoral protests, pro-democracy and pro-European forces. And at the same time reforming the membership process. The Gisic formula is: “Support those who are also striving, like Kosovo or Montenegro. And to others: Set the problem clear”. Germany had tried “at least rhetorically” to take a clearer course after elections in Serbia, which was surrounded on charges.
Barley is essentially agreed, as she explained for the FR.de: “Some countries are making great efforts to meet EU conditions. Northern Macedonia has even changed its name. We should not abandon these countries on their way to the EU”. It also strongly supported co-operation with pro-democratic forces among the civilian population.
Soder's co-operation with Vucinqi has almost failed to yield, at least at the moment. Shortly after the meeting, Vuciqi threatened to leave the Council of Europe if Kosovo would be admitted to it. Even in the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbian president used words of war: “We will fight. Serbia will win”, he said. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbian nationalists, above all Putin's friend Milorad Dodik, have long made division and the situation seems always explosive. And Sarajevo will now also negotiate accession with the EU.
Barley, however, stressed: “We want a Europe based on democracy and human rights. We must be more stable in this field”.
