The voting process, which will be organised on April 21st, is the first of its kind in Kosovo's more than two decade history of elections. Never before has voting process been organised, where voters will show whether they are for or against the mayor's departure from his post.
In this new situation, many issues remained unclear how the preparation process would be organised.
During today, the CEC will hold regular meetings, where it is expected to approve the task plan in which the deadlines will be set within which this institution will operate to prepare the voting process.
Periscop has contacted CEC spokesman Valmir Elez, on this issue, who has briefly said that we are in preparation for the task plan that will be presented at today's meeting.
So far, it is not known whether in this process there will be an election campaign for current mayors who could seek voter support to reject their dismissal.
On 21 April, if 50% +1 of every municipality's votes will vote for the mayor's dismissal, then the mayor is estimated to have lost his post and within 45 days the extraordinary elections would be organised to elect the new mayor.
Izmir Zeqiri chairman of Zubin Potok has told Periscopi that this referendum will not succeed.
Asked if I would go door-to-door to convince voters to vote against his departure from his position, Zeqiri has said that “are working on the basis of daily activities”.
I repeat that he will not succeed... we are continuing with daily work with our actions. This process will not succeed”, he said.
Meanwhile, European Parliament rapporteur for Kosovo Violet von Cromon has welcomed today the Central Election Commission's decision (KQZ) to vote for or against the departure of four mayors in the north.
I welcome the CEC's decision to appoint voting for the removal of mayors, which would pave the way for further escalation. All participants in the process should have equal treatment and respect democratic procedures to have free and fair elections in the north”, Von Cromon wrote on the social X network.
The Central Election Commission voted the recommendation that on April 21st be voted for or against the departure of four Albanian mayors in municipalities in northern Kosovo.
This recommendation came from the CEC Secretariat after verifying the submitted signings of the petition by the Leposaviqi, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and North Mitrovica municipalities.
According to the Secretariat, 20 percent of the signatures required by the total number of voters have been reached in these four municipalities in order to vote for the removal of municipal leaders.
Under the administrative directive allowing the removal of mayors, approved last September, for this vote to be successful, it takes 50 percent, plus a vote of citizens with the right vote.
