According to the White House announcement, the overall value of student loans canceled by the Biden administration amounts to almost $150 billion.

Democratic Biden last year pledged to find other ways to ease the debt after the Supreme Court in June blocked its broad plan to cancel $430 billion in student loans.

In the latest group of people who have been cancelled are workers in public services, such as teachers, nurses and firefighters who have met the criteria of the Programme for Forgiving Public Service Credits created in 2007 in order to be forgiven the student loans of Americans working in public service.

These public service workers have decided in their careers to serve their communities, but because of the failures of past administrations, when they were not helped the way the law envisions, Biden said through a statement.

By June 2023, an estimated 43.4 million U.S. student loan recipients had a combined debt worth $1.63 trillion, according to the Federal Students' Help website.
