The law enforcement authorities of Basel's area have turned a cold case of 2000. A 59-year-old suspect is in custody and concerns murder. Thanks to new forensic options and the punctual work of the Basel-Landschaft police, a suspected author was identified in 2023. The currently 59-year-old man, who lived in Germany, was extradited to Basil's law enforcement authorities in December 2023 and has since been in custody.

Following a murder of a 21-year-old then from the former Yugoslavia that occurred on the evening of October 4th 2000 in the area of St. Jacobsshall in Münchenstein, police and the office of public prosecutor Basel-Landschaft were soon able to establish a link between crime and drugs. The man was attacked while selling large amounts of narcotics.

The victim was executed with a bullet in the head. The man was found sitting in a red Smart machine. According to a police report at the time, it wasn't his car. The victim passed away at the hospital the next day.

A crime reconstruction took place in the parking lot on February 29th.

After the assassination, a bonus of 5,000 francs was offered for information leading to the finding of the perpetrators' author.

Media reports at the time link crime to an alleged mafia union from the former Yugoslavia that operated by a Swiss command centre.

In 2023, Basel-Landschaft police officers re-enlisted the evidence provided at the time. Because of ongoing improved scientific methods of legal medicine and punctual police work, it was possible that a specific person was left behind in the spring of 2023.

Further investigation suggested later that the identified person was probably the man who injured the victim to death on October 4, 2000. Basel-Landschaft's public prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation against the husband.

The suspect, who lived in Germany, was extradited to Basil's law enforcement authorities on December 8th 2023 and has since been in custody at the request of public prosecutor Basel-Landschaft's office. /20minute
