Osmani: Only 10 percent of military men are women, not enough

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani at the “Avancing representation and the role of women in the army: A step towards greater gender equality, peace and security”, said women's position, their participation in the level and decision-making processes in military structures worldwide still not at the desired level. The supreme commander of [...]

It's been a special honor for me to name the Genarellen, Irving Spahiu at one of the most important positions in our Security Force, but we can never do that. Ten percent is very low. We can and should do better than that, especially being a state aimed at being part of NATRO”, Osmani said.

The president stressed that the world we are living in today is facing much more complex security challenges than ever before in human history.

The traditional security and defence issues are taking new forms over time, from classical threats from aggressive states to hybrid warfare, from pandemics to climate change, our challenges are increasing. Facing these challenges cannot dominate gender inequality. Where gender inequality is, there can never be complete and lasting success”, it follows.

It showed that at last week's meeting there was at NATO headquarters the first topic that opened up to be Kosovo's commitment to the agenda for women, Peace and Security.

“The women's participation in the security field, particularly in military structures, as well as advancing this agenda, are not just words; they are real targets that stand in the gap of NATO engagement and operation. It has proved that only when women and girls are equally involved in security processes and peace, the results are really stable and effective. Kosovo has tremendous potential to become a model of women's empowerment in these areas. In view of the experience of many young women at the time, in Kosovo's war, fighting for our country's liberation, given the experience of our women in the process of enduring both peaceful and armed resistance, given our women's experience in organising protests for the liberation of this country, in view of our women's experience in building our cause for freedom, justice, independence before the eyes of the world, given the experience of our women in leadership for the freedom and independence and the experience of our women today, in the military and security structure in general, I am convinced that we can do our best to do the former president, Osman said.

To succeed Osmani said, more is involved than mere words.

He indicated that there will always be a meeting with security institutions' leaders to discuss the recent terrorist attack on Kosovo on critical infrastructure, and said that more women should always be on that table.
