Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia's use of a new, fast and powerful missile to attack the city of Dnipro on Thursday. He called it a <x0 nuclear adventure” and a strong escalation of the war.
The attack has raised fears of a new and dangerous phase of war.
In a speech later, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the use of a medium-range ballistic missile.
Zelensky named the attack as a sign of Moscow's broader strategy, saying: “It is clear that Putin is using Ukraine as a test ground for weapons threatening the world“.
While Putin named the use of the nuclear-powered Oressnik missile as a routine test within the conflict.
Russian “Federata tested a medium-range ballistic missile known as Oresnik, during its operation in Ukraine“, he said.
He offered little technical details about the attack.
Analysts said the use of the missile and the fact Putin accepted the attack, appears to be aimed at showing NATO and the United States are Russian military capabilities.
This marked the first time Russia openly acknowledged using such a missile during the war.
Ukraine's former ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly named the attack a new <x0phase” of Russian aggression. Speaking of Voice of America, he stressed that the attack was not only a challenge for Ukraine but also for its Western allies.
This is not just about Ukraine“, Chaly said.
“is a challenge for the European security system and for the United States. Moscow is signaling its readiness to escalate tensions dramatically to influence the West”.
He said that the response to the “attack should be clear, united and decisive, anything less, risks encouraging Russia and endangering global security”.
Western leaders also condemned the attack.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer named him irresponsible and dangerous “”, while EU Foreign Affairs spokesman Peter Stano named it a significant “escalation” of Russia's tactics.
