People's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius expelled himself from running last Thursday, ending speculation a few weeks if he should lead the SPD in the election instead of Scholz.
The executive committee of the centre-left SPD party voted unanimously for Scholzin as a candidate for Chancellor, allowing him to run for a second term, despite overseeing his three-way coalition collapse earlier this month.
In his speech, Scholz outlined the key points for his election campaign: ensuring peace by carefully supporting Ukraine against Russia's full-scale invasion, the revival of the economy, as well as the easing of the cost of living crisis, Reuters reports Clankosova.tv.
Scholz, the least popular Chancellor in Germany since reunification in 1990, has a difficult battle ahead of him if he wants to win the elections, which are expected to be held on February 23rd.
His SPD is currently in third place. A survey by pollster I The NSA, published Saturday, placed the party 14% behind opposition conservatives with 32% and the right extreme “Alternative for Germany” by 19%.
