About once a month, U.S. Army ships or planes go through or over the waters that separate Taiwan's democratic island and self-government from China. These missions always make Beijing angry.
China claims Taiwan is part of it and says it has jurisdiction over Taiwan's Strait. Taiwan and the U.S. reject that claim, saying the Strait is in international waters.
The American Navy said a sea patrol plane flew through the “storm into the international air space”, adding that the flight demonstrated the US commitment to a free and open Indo-peace Indo.
“Operating within Taiwan Strait, in accordance with international law, the US defends the rights and freedoms of all states”, it said in the statement.
The Chinese military criticised this flight, calling it “Mediabutt” and adding that it monitored the American plane during flight and responded to “effectively” to the situation.
“We call on the US to stop media coverage and jointly preserve regional peace and security”, the Chinese military said.
In April, China's military sent warplanes to monitor and warned the US Navy in Taiwan's Strait after Washington carried out a mission in the area. /rel
