European Commission President (KE) Ursula von der Leenen will visit the six countries of the Western Balkans, including Kosovo, next week to express its commitment and the commission on commitment to bringing the region towards the European Union.
Von der Leyen, who was re-elected in the summer for a new five-year term, has warned that the enlargement process is one of the main priorities and has appointed a commissionary, which will only deal with the expansion of the bloc.
According to warnings from the EC, during the visit to the region, Von der Leyen will focus mostly on helping EU countries accelerate reforms and preparations for faster progress in the European integration process.
Von der Leyen will start his tour on Wednesday, October 23rd, with Albania's first stop, where he will meet with President Bajram Begaj and Prime Minister Edi Rama. It will also participate in the inauguration of the European College Campus in Tirana.
On 24 October, it will go to northern Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Bosnia, it will also visit areas hit by the October 4th floods, and will express EU readiness to help cope with the consequences.
In Serbia, Von der Leyen will stay on October 25th, where he will meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq.
Von der Leyen will then travel to Kosovo on Saturday 26 October, where she will meet with President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The visit to the region will end with Montenegro's leaders Saturday in Podgorica.
Just days after her visit, the European Commission will approve and publish the annual enlargement package and progress reports for countries involved in the process.
The particular focus Von der Leen will be on the EU's package of growth and reforms in the Western Balkans, which envisions financial assistance of 6 billion euros to these countries.
Last Friday, the EU approved the reform agendas of five Western Balkan countries, which have presented them as a condition to benefit from the Development Plan package.
