Negotiations with the EU/ Rama: Membership is a matter of life and death, for us there is no other way

At the second intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania has met the European Union's conditions, while adding that progress has been made, and many undertaken reforms have brought success.

During his speech, Rama said the EU has sometimes shown injustice to Albania.

This today represents a major achievement both for Albania and for the EU and marks a cornerstone of common travel. Yesterday I was in Berlin and a journalist asked me if Albania has a plan B if the EU delays the process as it has done in the past. At times, the EU has been unfair, and it has proved unfair to us. However, we Albanians cannot have a plan B when it comes to individual freedom, or rule of law. The solution to an alternative to full membership in the EU would be to give up your lifestyle.

For us it is not pro-European rhetoric is a matter of life or death for our dream to leave our generations a place where freedom works for everyone. Albania has met all preconditions for launching this phase of membership. This is promoting a more transparent judicial system and in our first history we are seeing high profile investigations and political figures being tried or punished despite political ties. We will do this, our new justice institutions are marking significant progress along with European partners' legitimate agencies. We'll do this by going on. We have implemented a legal framework based on the standard Europa Council”, Rama said, writes AbcNews.

Unfortunately, it is true that sometimes the EU may be unfair and have been unfair to candidate countries, unjust to us, where it rejected the commission's actual recommendations. However, we Albanians cannot have a plan B. History has taught us that this cannot be found or even guaranteed outside the EU field. These are A, B, and C of the way of Erupian life. For us, it's not Eurasian rhetoric, it's a matter of life and death for our dream to leave to future generations a place where individual freedom is indisputable and rule of law works. Alternatives to this dream are just nightmares. We are here because Albania has fulfilled the preconditions and remains steadfast to fulfil all future obligations”, Rama said.
