German MPs say they are working for Kosovo to membership in KiE

German Bundestag deputies show, among other things, that Germany is committed to helping Kosovo secure majority support on the Committee of Ministers to join the Council of Europe. Despite the fact that on 16 April of this year, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe supported the report of Dora Bakoyannis, which recommends Kosovo's membership in this organisation, Kosovo did not find sufficient support in the Committee of Ministers.

Key states within the Council of Europe demanded at the end that the newest state in Europe take concrete steps towards the establishment of the Serb majority Communist Association writes tve1

But Kosovo is not alone on this road. The German liberal MP and Kosovo rapporteur for Bundestag, Thomas Hacker, says Germany is working seriously to help Kosovo secure the majority's support for membership in the Council of Europe.

“German is one states that mostly supports Kosovo. It was us who pushed Kosovo to apply to the Council of Europe, because we think Kosovo belongs there. Unfortunately, when the time came to vote we were afraid that Kosovo did not have the majority, so we suggested that the application be delayed for another time. I guarantee that Germany is working in this direction to help Kosovo secure the majority to join Council”, German MP Thomas Hacker says.

And the other German MP, Boris Mijatovic, says surprised that Kosovo did not find sufficient support last time to join the KiE.

He says that when majority support is secured, a date for Kosovo's membership in the Council will be set.

We were surprised to see some states that were unwilling to support Kosovo at the moment to join the Council of Europe. So discussions on this issue are continuing among member states in the Council of Europe. When majority support is secured, there will be a date. I consider this to be a matter that should be dealt with with very seriously”, Mijatovic says.

On the other hand, Serbia has actively lobbied against Kosovo in this process, thus violating the Ohrid Agreement.

Kosovo has applied for membership in the Council of Europe on 12 May 2022.
