Middle-range American weapons are expected to be deployed in Germany in 2026. But Chancellor Scholz's decision continues to displease. Both politicians and experts call for broader debate.

A government decision that is broadly influential in several areas in Germany like the one establishing new medium-range American missiles has caused major debates. Bundestag's left-wing MP, Dietmar Bartsch calls it “monstrusity”, the way the decision was taken and communicated. His parliamentary group in Bundestag wants the agreement between Germany and the US to be annulled. This is unlikely to happen, but since the SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced their station at the Magyars of the NATO summit in Washington in mid-July, a debate on security with different fears and concerns began. Contrary to his claims at that time, the decision came as a surprise to many observers. Even because it was not discussed within NATO either.

Opinions Divided Within Germans

In the current ARD trend in Germany by an infrared dam, 45 per cent of respondents are against the American weapons station and only 40 per cent are pro. In East Germany, where weapons are not allowed to be deployed because of Treaty Two Plus Four, rejection is higher, up to 57 percent. Polls by other institutes have shown a similar view since July. Scholz had referred to Russian weapons since the beginning of the attack in Ukraine and said Germany should reassure its threatening capacity”.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also spoke of a serious <x0hend capacity” that had to be closed. The three weapons systems that will be deployed in 2026 can reach as far as Russia. Some of them may be equipped with nuclear weapons, but they should only be used conventionally. The Chancellor has so far given up a government statement or something similar.

Meanwhile, criticism of the station's plans is also heard in the Chancellor's party, the SPD. The head of the parliamentary group Rolf Mützenich warns from the risk of unintentional military escalation. Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Weidke is calling for a broader discussion. And the left-wing MP within the SP, Ralph Stegner, spoke clearly against missile plans in a larger anti-war demonstration in Berlin on October 3rd. The same request was represented by the leader of the new leftist Alliance, Sahra Wagenknecht, and left-wing MP Gesit Lötzsch.

“communicaently communicate”

Protest researcher Alexander Leistner of the University of Leipzig, who investigates the pacifist movement, says the decision to station American weapons was “communiqun catastrophicly”. Since then, the discussion did not develop properly. They often lose certain aspects, such as, unlike the 1980s, when the controversial double decision was made NATO, the weapons this is about are not nuclear weapons. This is where various “performances occur. “Some see Russia as a threat to Europe, others see a representative war in Ukraine that threatens to escalate as a result of the deslocation”, Leistner said. There is widespread fear between the two positions.

Some would now try “to escalate everything into a war or peace matter”. At the same time, Leistner points out peace policy experts have gone second in the face of security policy expertise. Even the protests so far are still far from mobilizing against NATO's double decision or as against the Iraq war in 2003. At that time, several hundred thousand people demonstrated in Bonn and Berlin. Leistner believes the missile issue will come out more recently by the time of federal elections, and at least left politician Sahra Wagenknecht will use this.

The Wagenknecht Alliance has so far pursued a double strategy. At the federal level, this leftist party calls for a referendum. In Saxony, Tyering and Brandenburg, she is making rejection of the station's plans as a condition for possible coalitions. The rockets present a massive “threat to the population”, Bundestag MP Sevim Dagdelen said.

What you're talking about, for and against stationing.

Supporters of the station criticise that half - truths for the debate are being used in the ongoing debate. Democracy and the rule of law certainly must be named “ ”, SPD deputy Falko Dro unjustlymann says. Even a Coalition Partner The FDP made a similar statement. The deployment of American weapons is largely considered a response to the short-range Russian missiles that were deployed in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad since 2018. From there, nuclear weapons - equipped systems can reach almost all of Poland, parts of Balltic and Germany.

The most critical is former Colonel Wolfgang Richter. The security expert questioned the planned deployment of American weapons early and stressed that Germany will be “insisting” from the unilateral agreement with the US, as other European partners do not share the risks of deployment. Richter also doubts there is a gap in military capability. NATO could attack targets in Russia from today. However, the new missiles would significantly reduce warning time. This would change the strategic “balance between the US and Russia”. In other words it threatens instability, according to Richter.

Thus the German federal government's decision in favour of the missile station affects a population that is clearly committed to the NATO coalition in the polls. But at the same time, the fear of war is growing. /DW/
