From today, Kosovo license vehicles RKS will be able to move freely across Serbia's territory.

Serbia's government has made a decision to allow free movement for all vehicles with RKS license plates. This decision comes into force today (January 1st 2024).

The director of the so-called Office for Kosovo in Serbia Government, Petar Petkovovic, has stressed that allowing all vehicles from Kosovo to participate in street communications is done for practical reasons in order to ease the individual position and enable their freedom of movement.

The decision, according to him, goes into effect on 1 January 2024. This decision was actually our obligation from the 2011 agreement on freedom of movement signed by Borko Stefanovic, which refers to RKS plates and Kosovo IDs, allowing Kosovo patents”, Petkovic said.

The European Union has welcomed Serbia's decision to formal recognition of the license plates of the Republic of Kosovo (RKS).

According to EU spokesman Peter Stano, it is about a positive step in implementing the agreement on the road to normalisation, as well as the earlier obligations of dialogue concerning freedom of movement.

This shows that it is possible to achieve progress in the process of normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia. This decision also includes a step in the right direction towards a better regional and European integration of the Western Balkans, which eventually benefits citizens of the region”, has underlined Stano in a written reply.

For EU spokesman Peter Stano, this decision paves the way towards the full removal of the poster regime. The European Union, Stano claims, now expects Kosovo to act the same way.

And Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said the government will make the decision to allow Serbia's license plates to flow to Kosovo, only after Kosovo police are assured that Serbia's authorities are fully implementing the decision to free RKS plates in Serbia.

He made it known at the 62nd and last gathering for this year's executive. Prime Minister Kurti mentioned government achievements during this meeting.

Kurti said Kosovo will act based on the principle of reciprocity, and once the border police make sure Serbia is fully implementing the decision that cars with RKS plates circulate freely in the neighbouring state will allow the flow of Serbia's license plates to Kosovo. /rtk
