We residents of Recak thank the entire Albanian population, wherever they are coming, are visiting us on January 15th, helping us, facilitating us. As for the 25th anniversary organisation, which is also a Jubilar year, the government has taken over. It's under government auspices. Recak's residents have not only been satisfied with the schedule, the reason that at 08:30 are the homazes and 09:30 academys. Just for this time. Only on schedule have we been dissatisfied. Our proposal was even earlier, even now, of family members, to be delayed after 11: 00 p.m., 1300 or 2: 00 p.m., however, the academy is held in the afternoon hours”, he said.

DECLAIN

One of the worst massacres of Kosovo's 1998-99 war that rocked the world -- the January 15th of 1999 in Recak of the Black Community -- has turned 25 years.

The morning of January 15, 1999, for residents of the village of Recak of the Shtime Town, surrounded by Serb police formations, military and paramilitary units with heavy engine tools.

At 6 and 45 minutes of the morning, most of the village's inhabitants were awakened by the sound of heavy Serbian artillery, which began to promote the village from various positions.

After a series of grants, Serb members began house-to-house raids, where residents of this village tried to flee, but they were already surrounded. 24 men lined up in rows, as they walked jointly under Serb troops, pulled out of one of the village houses they were hiding in, executed in close range and slaughtered at the location known as “ropa of Bebush”.

A total of 45 civilian Albanians were killed and massacred the same day, including children, women and elders, from Serbian police, military and paramilitary forces at various locations.

The next day, on January 16th, Recak was visited by then head of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation Mission in Europe (OSBE), Ambassador William Walker, to see closely what had happened.

After visiting the village and climbing up to the place called “Gropa of Bebush”, where Recak's memorial complex is now located, Ambassador Walker was terrified by the sight of the corpses and without hesitation at that moment declared: “What I saw was obvious that we are dealing with massacres and crime against humanity. This is the saddest event in my life”
