The billionaire in the field of technology, Elon Musk, says his Neuralink company successfully implanted one of its brain chips with a wave of one man for the first time.

Initial results revealed promising stings of neurons or nerve impulses, and the patient is recovering well, he said.

The purpose of the company is to connect the human brain to computers and says it wants to help address complex neurological conditions.

A number of rival companies have already improvised similar devices.

Musk's company was granted permission to test the chip in people from the FDA in May, a historic moment after previous efforts to win approval.

This gave the green light for the start of a six-year study, during which a robot is being used surgically to put 64 flexible fibers, more thin than a human hair, into a part of the brain that controls “the goal of the” movement, according to Neuralink.

The company says that these fibers allow its experimental implants enabled by a battery that can be loaded with waves to record and transmit wireless brain signals to an app decodonating how the person intends to move.

Posting on X, the social media platform it owns, which was formerly known as Twitter, Musk said Neuralink's first product would be called Telepathy.

Telepathy, he said, would enable your “phone or computer control, and through them almost every device, just thinking”.

The original “users will be the ones who lost the use of their members”, he continued.

Referring to the late British scientist who had motor neurons, he added: “imagine that Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a printer or auction director. That's the point. ”

As Musk's involvement increases Neuralink's profile, he faces rivals, some of whom have a history dating back two decades. The Utah-based Blackrock Neurotech planned the first of many brain-computer interfaces in 2004.

Pressure Neuroscience, formed by a Neuralink cofounder, also aims to help people with paralysis. And its implant resembles a piece of very thin tape that lies on the surface of the brain and can be implanted through a <x0micro-crazy frame”, which is said to be a much simpler procedure.

Existing equipment has also generated results. In two recent scientific studies in the U.S., implants were used to monitor brain activity when a person tried to speak, which could then be decoded to help them communicate.
