Early elections, Osmani: I intervene in such processes, if there is agreement between parties I can set the date

Republic of Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has talked today about the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections in the country. Osmani has said that if he agrees among political parties, there are several options for extraordinary elections, which allow the country's Constitution. “

Osmani has said that if he agrees among political parties, there are several options for extraordinary elections, which allow the country's Constitution.

“If political parties agree to keep them earlier, there are several options which allow the Constitution of Kosovo. One of them is for the Parliament to be distributed earlier, but for such a thing it takes 2/3 of the votes, therefore it takes some kind of reconciliation or agreement between the overwhelming majority of political parties that are in the Kosovo Assembly for an earlier date”, she has said.

The first of the state has expressed itself ready to announce the new date of elections, as political parties agree and disperse the Parliament, but have said it does not intervene in such processes.

If they reach this agreement, then the moment they agree and distribute the Assembly, as presidents, I announce the new date of elections within 30 days. Now I don't interfere with such processes. However, if there are demands from political parties, and I'm speaking here from both the majority and the opposition to gather everyone in order to discuss a new date, of course I do, but it's never the president's job to impose earlier dates than what is before with the Constitution in regular processes”, president Osmani has said.

As for the methods that can send the country to early elections, Osman has cited no-confidence motions, government resignations and the distribution of the Assembly.

However, none of them are initiated or made possible by the country's president, but by parties which are both in government and opposition. If none of these three events occur, as I mentioned, the regular date of elections is the beginning of next year”, the president has said, among other things.

We remember that the possibility of holding early electors has been mentioned much recently, even by the ruling party, the Vetevendosje Movement.

Chief Parliamentary Glauk Konjufca said it would be good to go to extraordinary elections.

“cannot rule out the possibility for early elections. It seems to me that the mandate, if the government thinks it has to go to the end, who am I to be involved. However, because of the 2024 and the developments I mentioned, I would like to, this is my most private opinion, that Kosovo should not go through these processes, and that these processes affect the legitimacy of future power in Kosovo. I would like more, it's the option that I think, that would be much more desirable... that I don't have for the self-rule movement, I have for Kosovo, it would be healthier for the legitimacy of the new power to face those challenges, not those challenges to guide the character of legitimacy”.

Even Democratic Party of Kosovo chairman Memli Krasniqi has said Kosovo needs early elections. This attitude, The PDK has made it clear since July last year, according to him.

Democratic League of Kosovo deputy leader Lutfi Haziri says his party is ready for early elections, but that it will not demand them.

According to him, elections should be fair, because current power does not have much time left until the end of the mandate.

Otherwise, if elections are held in order, they would have to be held in February 2025.
