The European Union (BE) has on Monday rejected Serbian claims that the West sparked several-day protests in Serbia and that it is trying to intervene in Serbia's election process following the December 17th elections.
EU spokeswoman Peter Stano said during a media conference in Brussels that these claims resemble the Russian <x0-narrattive”.
We reject these charges, which are without ground. They are completely false accusations and are promoted by Russian propaganda in order to prevent Serbia's path towards the EU”, Stano said.
Politicians in Serbia have accused the West of standing behind protests in Belgrade against alleged irregularities in last month's elections.
Serbia's Prime Minister Anna Brnabiq, among other things, claimed the protests were “attempts to destabilise Serbia”.
Stano again urged Serbia to avoid Russian-led rhetoric against The EU.
“The EU has been very clear, keeping ties with Russia at wartime and its aggression against Ukraine is not in line with the EU membership process. The bloc wants to account for all candidate countries, as in reliable partners in protecting common principles such as values, security and prosperity”, Stano said.
A series of protests have been held in Serbia following the December 17th elections, prompted by allegations of electoral theft by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which declared victory at all levels.
SNS and state leaders deny these accusations.
Doubts of election irregularities also voiced the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), which on December 18th reported that the elections were marked with major irregularities, misuse of public funds, media dominance by President Aleksandar Vuciq, negative campaign and widespread fear.
The United States of America called on authorities in Serbia to investigate international observers' claims of election irregularities.
Also, part of the eurodeputs demanded an independent investigation into all irregularities reported during the elections in Serbia.
“As far as elections in Serbia and what followed, the EU has called for all actors for calm and dialogue. Pollens for election irregularities must be properly investigated and addressed. We have been clear that since the right to peaceful protests is valid, violence is not the solution and is unacceptable. Police actions should be proportional and respect fundamental rights and rule of law”, Stano added. / REL
