The US and British armies, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, launched attacks Thursday on targets used by Iran-backed rebel group Houthi, president of the United States Joe Biden, said.
“These attacks are in direct response to unprecedented attacks by (group) Houthi against international ships on the Red Sea, including the use of ballistic missiles against ships for the first time in history”, President Biden said through a press release.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also announced the attacks on the Houthi group.
He said the Houthite group attacks have endangered American personnel, civil sailors and United States partners, threatened trade and threatened freedom of navigation.
More than 50 countries have been affected by 27 attacks on international commercial ships. Equips from more than 20 countries have been threatened or taken hostage in piracy acts”, says President Biden.
He added that “would not hesitate to order further measures” to protect people and free trade.
The attacks were carried out by Tomahawk missiles issued by ships and fighter planes, US officials told the Associated Press agency. Military targets included logistical centres, air defence systems and weapons depots, officials said.
The attacks were the United States' first military response to the ongoing campaign of fears and rockets on commercial ships since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.
The co-ordinated military attack comes a week after the White House and a number of partner countries warned the Houth rebels that they would face military responses if the attacks did not stop. / VOA
