On January 25, 1961, millions of Americans watched the first live television broadcast of a presidential press conference.

President John Kennedy, who had begun his post five days earlier, answered reporters' questions for nearly 35 minutes.

This was the first of many press conferences, broadcast live by television that Kennedy held during less than three years in office. Kennedy, who was 43-year-old when he was sworn in as president of the country, was calm, confident in himself and clever at direct press conferences.

His assistants viewed these press conferences as a means of making known the American people with the qualities and communication skills of President Kennedy. Transmissions of this kind actually increased the popularity of the American president.
