DPSK: Thaci and Wessel to continue detention measure

Michael Doyle, spokesperson for Kosovo Specialised Chambers ( DPSK) in The Hague, through weekly information by DKSK for the media on Thursday, has said former KLA leaders Hashim Thaci and Kadri Wessel will be continued detention measures, as the court has concluded there is a danger of breaking the detention measure [...]

The Judge's Body found that there is still the danger that Mr. Thaci and Mr. Wessel prevents the performance of the process and/or other criminal acts. The Judicial Chamber also found that these risks could be significantly reduced through the framework for monitoring communications used at the DHSK detention facility. Being like Mr. Thaci and Mr. Wessel, have remained in custody for a considerable period of time”, Doyle said.

While, regarding the performance of the issue this week, he said he has completed the testimony of the first two witnesses, while third witness testimony is continuing at the closed session.

The first two witnesses called by the prosecution in Hashim Thaci's trial, Kadri Veselin, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi finished their testimony. They testified with protective measures and mainly at private hearings, and both were asked questions by the defence teams, and one of them also by defenders of the victims. The third witness testimony is continuing and is being carried out at the closed session”, Doyle said.

He further said that in the court case against Peter Shala, on April 13th, the court authorised the testimony of three witnesses via video connection.

The Judicial Chamber found that existing technology allows witnesses to be questioned under the same conditions as in the courtroom and will enable these witnesses to testify without anxiety, which will improve the quality of their testimony and will benefit their physical and psychological well-being”, it has said.

According to him, the court ordered the Administrative Office to make the necessary preparations to ensure respect for safeguard clauses for witnesses, he added that on the same court case, on 14 April, the ZPS handed over the edited public version of its preliminary file, in the application of the court's order.

Otherwise, the following hearing in this court case is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 1, 9: 30 p.m.

Judgment hearings in this case will continue throughout the week, from 1 May to 5 May.

Otherwise, Kosovo Specialised Chambers in The Hague every Thursday at 14:30, via online platform “Zoom” hold weekly information offering updated information on recent developments regarding judicial procedures and activities in this court. /Betimy for Justice
