An Italian prosecutor acknowledged on Wednesday that authorities may have underestimated a threat of persecution against a 26-year-old pregnant woman when they failed to take action against her former lover, who now allegedly killed her in her home with a knife.
Prosecutor Marco Martani told reporters that the victim, Vanessa Ballan, had made a statement on October 26th, claiming that the suspect, Bujar Faraj, climbed a gate and tried to enter the house she shared with her companion and 4-year-old son. Ballan accused Fadin of even other aggressive behaviour, the AP reports.
Authorities searched the man's house the next day, after which “no more episodes of harassment, rapprochement, threats”, quoted by “Crrier della Sera” as saying Martha. “Rasti was labelled not immediately, which unfortunately resulted in”.
He said authorities lacked the indicators needed to take further action. The only measure that could prevent aggression would be prevention, the provision for which there were no enough elements”, Marani said.
Prosecutors said the aggressor used a hammer to break a window to enter the Ballan house near Travisos, north of Venice, in the Venice region on Tuesday. Ballani, who at the time was alone, was stabbed at least seven times. A knife believed to be the murder weapon was found in the victim's kitchen, and police found from the suspect's apartment a bag with a hammer, at least one more knife and other tools used for breaking the house.
Faraj, a Kosovo citizen living in Italy, was arrested late Tuesday in his home in a nearby town.
The two were involved in a connection that started last year and which she ended during the summer. The threats began soon afterwards, and he often appeared at the supermarket where she worked as a cashier, prosecutors said.
Ballani's murder comes just a month after Italy was rocked by the 22-year-old Giulia Ceccettin, who was found dead, with its throat broken, in a ditch in a remote area of the alpine lowland, also in the Venice region. She was missing after meeting her ex-boyfriend for a burger. He was arrested in Germany and is in an Italian prison pending charges.
Ceccetin was among 102 women killed by mid-November this year in Italy, more than half of the current partners, or former intimate partners, according to the Interior Ministry. Updated figures were not available immediately. /Klankosova. tv
