Hospitals and health care institutions throughout Ukraine have experienced drastic increases in infections due to resistance to antibiotics in recent weeks, leading the World Health Organization and the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) to warn Kiev that the epidemic is potentially a global threat.

“This is a crisis that requires immediate action, even during the duration of the war, because similar experiences from other war zones have taught us that the recent response to the threat of this kind can have extremely negative long-term consequences not only for locals but also for the entire world”, says the open letter of the respective institutions.

Ukrainian Public Health Institute officials conducted research in three regional hospitals ʹ Trnopolje, Kmilnytsky and Winnitsia. Of the 353 patients examined, infections were found in 50 of them - 14 percent - during their stay in health institutions, Reuters writes.

Of the infected patients, up to 60 percent had drug - resistant pathogens. Before the war, the trend was about 6 percent. The preliminary discovery of the problem identified a number of concessions, from the hygiene of the hands of health workers dealing with wounds suffered in the field of battle to the numerous “sfides” in laboratory and operating halls equipment. Also, the biosecurity assessment is in a “nivel subnotial”.

A special report by the CDC says that up to six separate drug - resistant bacteria were found only in a Ukrainian patient. The World Health Organization warns that such infections are considered to be one of the greatest threats to global public health. According to 2019 reports, more than 1 million people worldwide have died because of it.
