Asked whether he is concerned about the long-term stability in Kosovo, Stoltenberg said he has spoken with political leadership in Pristina and Belgrade about tensions in northern Kosovo and that all sides must remain calm, avoid unilateral acts, and engage constructively in dialogue mediated by the European Union.
“in line with its UN mandate, KFOR's mission is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to intervene if stability is threatened. Our mission is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for all people in Kosovo”, it has declared, among other things.
The Alliance's leader stressed that NATO continues to fully support the EU-mediated dialogue and calls on all sides to continue negotiations, as it sees it as essential to regional peace and security.
Asked about the construction of a maritime base in the Adriatic Sea, which Albania and NATO are negotiating and other possible investments and the deployment of troops in the region, Stoltenberg said the new NATO Strategic concept, which was adopted at the Madrid summit, confirmed once again the strategic importance of the Western Balkans to the alliance.
When asked about Russian influence in the Western Balkans, Stoltenberg said NATO calls on Russia to play a constructive role in the Western Balkans, but that Russia is doing just the opposite.
