Sri Lanka's Parliament voted today for the election of president, and Wickremedinghe had for counterCandids, Dulus Alapperuma.
Sri Lanka's former president, Gotabaya Rajapapasa, left the state last week. He first went to Maldives and later to Singapore, as thousands of protesters entered the presidential building and other government buildings, demanding his resignation.
Protesters have also demanded the resignation of Wickreminghes, who was nominated to the prime minister's post in May. Protesters have burned his private house, but they have also attacked the prime minister's office in Columbus, challenging his leadership.
Despite the ongoing protesters demanding Wickreminghe's resignation, he took up the post of applicant of the president's office shortly after Rajapaxa left.
Wickreminghe will be in office by November 2024.
Sri Lanka is facing a lack of basic supplies, including food and fuel supplies.
Wickreminghe will try to restore political stability in the state so that he can start negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout.
