He came from Switzerland on vacation in his native country, but it didn't all go well. Nezir Mehmetaj in the winter of 2020 was arrested at the Merdar border checkpoint under war crimes allegations and, since then, he has been staying in custody in Serbia. Mehmetaj on 3 January 2020 was banned by Serbian authorities until he was returning to Kosovo with his mother from a hospital in Nis.
Mehmetaj's family say that Nezir's health is not good, he suffers from diabetes and also from insomnia, based on an uncertain feeling of sleep.
Nezir from the Kosovo Liaison Office in Belgrade makes visits and when the court hearing is held is also conveyed by the official of this liaison office of our state.
Mehmetaj's lawyer, Milic Konstantinovic, has said of RTK will not be promoted until Nezir's trial is concluded. With the arrests of Kosovo citizens, Serbia is committing violations, says Ehat Miftaraj of the Kosovo Institute for Justice, under which Resolution 1244 defines that for any crime or any possible suspicion of any criminal offence on Kosovo territory, competent authorities are competent in the Republic of Kosovo
Serbia's “Republic has no mandate, no authority, and should not arrest or judge the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo in any case when there is speculation that we may be perpetrators of war crimes crimes acts. In this direction I believe that the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, with particular emphasis the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, would have to have a greater voice with international partners in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue so that this in some way is not misused by the Republic of Serbia to pressure or violate the rights and human freedoms of Kosovo Republic officials”
Nezir Mehmetaj is accused of participating in war crimes against civilians in the village of Rudica in the municipality of Kline in June and July 1999. He is accused of involvement in the murder of seven persons and the burning and robbing of houses in Rudica as a member of the KLA.
