Italy's populist movement Five Stars has refused to support Prime Minister Mario Draghi's national unity government in a critical parliamentary vote, placing the country in a new round of political unrest.
Draghi met with President Sergio Mattella before offering his resignation.
The five stars -- the second-largest party in parliament -- boycotted Thursday's vote for a 26 billion-euro package aimed at protecting Italians from the impact of worsening inflation.
The leader of the Five Stars, Giuseppe Cute, said he could no longer support Draghi's interparty government, which he accused of not doing enough to help families facing increased food and energy costs.
“I have a strong fear that September will be a time when families will face the choice to pay their electricity bill or purchase of food,” said Ctete after a party meeting Wednesday.
