UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Saturday condemned the reported attacks at the port of Odessa in Ukraine. His spokesman noted that all parties involved in the fighting, Moscow and Kiev, had pledged an agreement Friday to export cereals from Ukraine's ports.
“These products are desperately needed to deal with the global food crisis and to alleviate the suffering of millions in need around the globe“, UN spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement. “Full implementation (of agreement) by the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Turkey is essential“.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that if the deal is not met, Russia will take full responsibility for the global food crisis.
Meanwhile, the British Defence Ministry announced this morning that severe fighting in Ukraine has taken place in the last 48 hours. Ukrainian forces have continued their offensive against Russian forces in the Kherson region west of the Dnipro River.
In the statement posted on Twitter, the ministry said “Russia is likely to try to slow down Ukrainian offensive by using nuclear zooms“. The statement also said that Russian forces' supply lines west of the Dnipro River are increasingly endangered.
The U.S. has promised Ukraine a new $270 million aid package, including four high-speed missile systems known as HIMARS systems.
The Ukrainian Army has already deployed at least eight HIMARS on the front line, while four others are in other positions.
The recent United States promise brings to 16 the total number of HIMARS systems that Kievi has. In addition, Ukraine has deployed six medium-range and long-range missile systems supplied by Germany and Britain.
On Friday, Ukraine and Russia signed agreements that pave the way for Kiev to export millions of tons of grain worldwide.
Ukraine, one of the main suppliers of this product, has been unable to export grain due to the Russian attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said some 20 million tonnes of grain are expected to be exported, while announcing that his country currently has a quantity of grain worth about $10 billion. /voa.
