Vadym Denysenko told Ukrainian national television that enemy forces are seeking to approach Harkiv, northeast of Ukraine, in an effort to bomb him.
“Russia is trying to make Harkiven the first-line town”, he said.
Harkiv is a mostly Russian-speaking city of about 1.4 million people.
It stretches some 20 miles [30 km] from the Russian border.
Last week, reports suggested Russian forces had deployed artillery to prevent a Ukrainian counteroffensive near Harkiv.
Amnesty International claimed last week that Russian troops had held “a ruthless bombing campaign against Harkiv”.
The report said that “very much of the [Russian] attacks were carried out using widely banned <x1) ammunition.
Harkiwi, the town located at the northeast end of Ukraine near the Russian border, was heavily bombed by Moscow forces.
Russia has begun its unprotested invasion of Ukraine on February 24th. Russian President Vladimir Putin has named it “special operation”.
The West has strongly condemned the invasion and imposed a series of serious sanctions against Russia.
