It was March 1999, which for the people of Kosovo was extremely serious.

Long columns of people - young people with purses in their hands, crying children, older ones who could barely walk - were on a path they had no idea where to take them.

Fearing at every step they took you don't even know where they were going, they just wanted to get as far away from the Serb paramilitaries who, during 1998-99, killed civilians and innocents, and burned everything they had ahead.

Bosnian photographer Damir Sangolaj, who works for Reuters during the war period in Kosovo, had fired photographs reflecting the real state of war and the terror that people were experiencing.

In the photo taken by Sagoj, there is a long column of Kacanik residents, but there is a woman in focus with a white headscarf while carrying a baby in her bosom. Fear and anger are seen in her face.

This woman is called Sheriff Luta, who had survived very well that time, while the baby in her hands, better said her daughter, is now grown up and although at the time she had no idea what was happening.

On the occasion of marking the 23rd anniversary of Kosovo's liberation, US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeff Hovenier has met Sheriff Luta.

It was a pleasure meeting Sheriff Luta and her family today at the Peace Day party. 23 years ago, the Sheriff became the face of a brutal war after she and her child left Kosovo. Today they are safe and healthy, he wrote Havenier until he's on his right hand is Sheriff Luta.
