The statue in Kotka, southeast Finland, has often been vandalised over the years -- but it has been given special attention since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The monument was presented as a gift from the twin city of Kotca, Tallinn, in 1979 and was built by the artist from Estonia, Matti Variki. During that time Estonia had been part of the Soviet Union.
Proposals submitted to the city council stated that the statue was an insult to the memory of those killed in Soviet war crimes. /Periscopi/
