The German Chancellor had said he would not visit Ukraine simply and only for photographs, writes BBC, records Periscopi.
So, what will he offer? Ukrainian Ambassador to Berlin is clear telling a German newspaper this morning that Kiev wants heavy arms from Germany, especially Leopard and Marder tanks.
Tanks have become a bit of an ugly word in Berlin. Scholz had promised artillery and heavy weapons to Ukraine, but has not yet materialized the promise. Germany has sent other tools of war and aid, but if compared with national GDP, its financial contribution is overshadowed by the Baltic states and Poland.
Ukraine has accused him of trying to balance support for Kiev with a desire to preserve a relationship with Russia. It's a suspicion that he has to remove today.
And it's not just the Ukrainian leadership that's going to see Scholz closely today.
Germans also want to know what this leader stands for -- that is gaining a rather confusing reputation.
Driven by Ukraine's Russian invasion, Scholz claims he has sent his country to another level in defence and military matters. But behind pledges to spend more on the German army, many are guessing what it actually means.
Therefore, even if he is photographed today, this visit is an opportunity for Scholz to let him know what he long promised -- clarity. /Periscopi/
