Doubt that Russia can stop gas supply for Europe

The International Energy Agency has warned that Russia could fully stop supplying Europe with gas to increase its political impact following aggression in Ukraine. But on the other hand, Europe is trying to avoid an energy crisis this winter. In recent days Russia has strictly restricted Europe's gas supply, [...]

In recent days Russia has strictly limited Europe's supply of gas, blaming technical problems caused by sanctions. Europe accuses the Kremlin of geopolitical play.

A complete break would plunge Europe into an energy crisis, analyst Tom Marzec-Manser tells the Voice of America.

For the moment, gas supplies through pipelines from Russia are a quarter and a year ago. This low volume is causing concern. What it means is that rebuilding warehouses and increasing pre-winter reserves is much more difficult. ”

Europe wants to fill its gas reserves by November to account for 80% of capacity. Currently, this reserve is 55%. The increase in gas prices since the attack in Ukraine has benefited Russia.

“Brenda a short period of Gazprom time has benefited large sums of money. That means the company has cash reserve for a few years when we talk about limiting fuel flow”, says analyst Tom Marzec-Manser.

Germany imports about a third of its gas from Russia. The government said Thursday that the country was in the second phase of the gas emergency plan, calling on Germans to reduce gas consumption.

Germany's “from now on has a lack of gas supply”, German Economy chief Robert Habeck said.

Consumers should play their part, says analyst Claudia Chemfert.

We were expected to face this situation sooner or later. Now it's important that we do everything we can to save gas. ”

These include industry, causing fears that an energy crisis could plunge Europe into recession.

“Industria and energy sector must play an important role in saving gas. Many governments in Europe have proposed allowing coal use”, says analyst Tom Marzec-Manser.

This conflicts with Europe's promise of gradually giving up coal and fossil fuels.

“We need much faster expansion of the renewable energy sector”, says analyst Claudia Chemfert.

European leaders have tried to find other sources in the face of the situation created by Russian gas. Imports from the United States of natural gas, altered in liquid state, have increased significantly. The EU signed an agreement this month to increase imports from Israel and Egypt.

But analysts say Europe will find it difficult to replace Russian gas before winter. A cold season would burden the crisis. / VOA
