The Unity Team on June 13th 2007 announced the 15-day contest for Kosovo flag and coat of arms, saying that “each proposal should adhere to the spirit and contents of the comprehensive proposal for resolving Kosovo's status.
It then notes that no Albanian symbol should be used and that red and black colors (because of Albania's flag) and red, blue and white (Serbia's flame).
The flag of the Republic of Kosovo was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo shortly after Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia on February 17th 2008.
The flag was the result of an international race for his design, where nearly a thousand works were delivered.
The version used now is a variation of the work designed by Muhammad Ibrahim. He has six white stars in a arch over a golden map of Kosovo in the blue background.
They symbolize Kosovo's six main ethnic groups.
