General Roman Kutuzov was chief of staff of the 29th Army combined weapons, according to reports.
His vehicle was attacked by Ukrainians and he died in a fight in Donbas, sources say.
He became the 11th general killed, while at least 49 Russian colonels have been killed since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
