May 31 marks World Day without Smoking - a day dedicated to the fight against tobacco.
The purpose of marking this day is to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco consumption. This annual festival informs the public of the dangers of using tobacco, what the World Health Organization is doing to combat the tobacco epidemic, and what people worldwide can do to seek their right to health and healthy life and to protect future generations.
This year's theme for the World Day without Duhan is “Duhan, a threat to our environment”.
World Health Organization member states established World Day without Tobacco in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and its preventable deaths and diseases.
In 1987, the World Health Assembly approved the EHA40.38 Resolution, calling for April 7, 1988, to be a global “against smoking”. In 1988, the JHA42.19 resolution was adopted, calling for the celebration of World Tobacco Day every year on May 31st.
According to the Kosovo National Institute of Public Health, smoking is the leading cause of premature illness and death, is the second cause of death in the world.
Each year around the world, about 8 million people die as a result of smoking, the number based on the current trend, is expected to double over the next 20 years. Every 6.5 seconds in the world dies one person from the damage tobacco smoke does, according to the OBS.
Smokers are twice as endangered by strokes and fourfold by heart disease as non-smoking.
They are up to 22 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-duhanpiers.
Smoking affects environmental pollution and has negative effects on society. Smoking increases family expenses and contributes to poverty.
According to IKPK, the benefits of quitting can be as immediate as:
After just 20 minutes of smoking, your heartbeat normalizes
Within 12 hours, the carbon monoxide levels in your blood drop to normal
Within 2-12 weeks, your circulation improves and lung function increases
Within 1-9 months, coughing and panting decrease
Within 15 years, the risk of presenting heart disease is as much as a non-dukanpirer.
Within 5-15 years, the risk of heart attack decreases into that of a non-duhanpier.
The chances of smokers quitting successfully are 84% greater when they receive intensive medical advice.
