One of the worst scenarios that can be thought of is the use of nuclear weapons by Russian troops. Fear is growing not only in the West, but also in a part of the Russian population that is not in favour of the military strategy outlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Muratov did not rule out the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine by the Russian Army: “The possibility of using nuclear weapons cannot be ruled out”.
Russia named it “big tragedy” the situation that Ukraine is facing and warned of the consequences it would have for Ukraine and the West that Russia could use nuclear weapons: “If such a decision is made, no one could stop it. No Parliament, no civil society”.
In his appearance in Geneva on the International Press Freedom Day case, the journalist also warned of two reports made by Russian public television, controlled by the Kremlin: “For two weeks we have heard that these terrible weapons should be used in case weapons supplies to Ukraine continue”, he said.
