Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet responded to Pope Francis' request to meet in Moscow to discuss the war in Ukraine.
The pope said the meeting would be within the framework of efforts to stop the conflict, which erupted at the end of February after Russian troops invaded Ukraine.
He also told the Italian newspaper “Cerrie Della” that Patriarch Kiril of the Russian Orthodox Church, which has supported the war, “cannot become the son of Putin's altar”.
On Sunday, Pope Francescu described the war in Ukraine as a “macabre of humanity” and said Mariupol was “bored and badly destroyed”.
In a 15-minute speech in St Peter's Square, he said that “thought stands in the Ukrainian town of Marioupol, the town of Mary, bombed and viciously destroyed”.
