Although in the middle of weeks the parties agreed to leave the opposition the right to propose and first the candidate, the deal did not go smoothly after the leader of the DP parliamentary group Enkeleed Alibeaj accused the Socialists of ruining it.
We remember that the first round of election of president was approved on 16 May without official candidates, as parliamentary groups in the Albanian Parliament did not surrender candidacy.
According to Albania's Constitution, the presidential candidate is nominated by a group of no less than 20 deputies.
For the country's president's election, the Parliament holds up to five votes. The president is elected in the first, second or third vote, when a candidate receives no less than three fifths of the vote (84 votes) of all members of the Assembly, while Albania's Assembly has 140 deputies.
In the fourth and fifth votes, candidate president is elected who secures more than half the votes of all members of the Parliament. The fifth vote is held when no candidate has secured the required majority of votes in the fourth vote.
