Haradinaj has said Nishani will be remembered as a leader of integrity and a major contributor to democracy in Albania.
President Bujar Nishani passed away. We associate with family and relatives for this great loss. It will always be remembered as a leader of integrity and a major contributor to democracy in Albania. May he rest in peace”, Haradinaj wrote.
Otherwise, Albania's former president, Bujar Nishani, has died on Saturday, May 28th, of health complications as a result of a several-month battle with COVID-19. He was 55 years old.
Nishani passed away to a hospital in Germany, where he was sent a month earlier for intensive care after his health burden. He also suffered from an auto-immune disease.
Nishani was elected president of Albania in 2012, and served in this position along a full mandate until 2017.
In this position came an academic career near Albania's Armed Forces and several-year engagement in Albania's Ministry of Defence in the first decade of democratic transition.
Nishani was a senior member of Albania's Democratic Party and served as deputy from the ranks of this party in Albania's Parliament in 2005.
He held the position of interior minister in 2007 and 2011, while that of the justice minister in 2009.
