The Memorial of World War II this 8 and 9 May is darkened by the war under way in Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivered a special speech yesterday on the occasion of the end of World War II. May 8, 1945, marks the surrender of Hitler's Germany. But May 8th 2022 finds Europe in a new war. Scholz cited in this context Germany's historic responsibility, which derives responsibility for Ukraine's support. Germany has learned the central lesson from catastrophic history between 1933 and 1945, Scholz said, never again! Never more war. Never more genocide. Never again rule violence. And yet there has been war in Europe again.” For the German Chancellor this may only mean “we help end the violence.” That is why weapons have been sent to a war zone for the first time, Scholz said.
Like “down and manipulation of history” called Scholz the equivalent of the barbarous armed war “Russia is waging with the fight against nationalism. German was then guilty of both nations, Russian and Ukrainian. With both of us reaching for decades reconciliation”, Scholz said. But now the Russian president wants to subdue Ukraine, destroy its culture and identity. The German Chancellor promised further aid to Ukraine, including heavy weapons. We support Ukraine in the fight against the aggressor. To avoid doing so means to capturing before clear violence and strengthening the aggressor. ”
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also gave a speech on the occasion of the end of World War II Steinmeier referred to a “Age change”. May 8 has not only been a day of memory and warning, but “for a long time” also a “Day of Hope”, Steinmeier said at the Federal Congress of German Trade Associations, DGB. But today on this 8 May has ruined the dream of a joint European home; the nightmare has taken its place”, the German president said. This May 8th is a day of war.” / DW
