With Russian and Serbian flags and photos of President Vladimir Putin in hand, thousands of Serbian citizens marched on the streets of Belgrade to protest the government's attempt to distance themselves from Moscow's war in Ukraine, A2 reports CNN. Groups of people, many of whom nationalists, joined the march from downtown to Russian embassy, where they sang the national anthems of Serbia and Russia and shouted slogans against NATO.
I came to this protest to support Russia and to say clearly and strongly, no, the actions of the Belgrade authorities, which made the shameful decision to vote against Russia at the United Nations”, Mladen Obradovic said.
In recent weeks, Belgrade voted three times in favour of the resolution, which condemned the Russian war in Ukraine and suspended Moscow from the Human Rights Council. Yet, Serbia, which is almost entirely dependent on Russian gas and oil, refuses to impose sanctions against the Kremlin and has allowed regular flights to Moscow.
“No NATO” and “Serbs and Russians are brothers” called out protesters, who also held slogans against President Vucic, who won a new presidential mandate on April 3rd.
Earlier in the week, in a move that experts reportedly signalled secession from military co-operation with Russia, Vucic said Serbia was thinking of buying over 20 Western combat aircraft. / A2 CNN
