The 53-year-old winner of the “Best Actor” award this year reacted after the board of governors of the Academy of Arts and Film Sciences decided to ban it from Oscar's ceremonies and other events of the Academy for the next 10 years, after it hit actor Chris Rock on stage, during the ceremony, which was held on March 28th.
“I accept and respect the Academy's decision”, Smith said in a statement provided by People magazine.
The Academy determined that “over a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Smith will not be allowed to participate in any events or Academy programme, personally or virtually, including but without being limited to the Academy Awards”, according to a letter sent by the President of the David Rubin Academy and CEO Dawn Hudson.
Smith struck Rock during this year's ceremony, after he had mocked Smith's wife's hair, Yada Pinket Smith, who suffers from the alopesia disease.
