The Scandinavian state has stepped up efforts to become a NATO member, with Finland's Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, who said his state's position would be clarified in the coming weeks.
But lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov from Russia's High House said membership in the alliance would be “a terrible tragedy”, with similar threats of aggression in Ukraine.
“If Finland's leadership decides on such a thing, it would be a strategic error”, he said.
“Finland, which has been successfully developed throughout these years thanks to economic and trade ties with Russia, would become the next target. I think this would be a terrible tragedy for all the people of Finland”, he added.
His warnings came after Minister Haavisto said today that NATO member states have offered their help to ensure the application process.
Support for Finland to join NATO has increased since its neighbour, Russia, invaded Ukraine.
