In these sixty days of conflict, Pope Francis has tried three times to exercise his weight of moral authority over the Kremlin, sending direct messages to Moscow through diplomatic channels, and also using Patriarchate, to help create a humanitarian corridor to Mariupol. Russia, however, revealed to the Vatican three times that it would not guarantee any security.
This has been disappointing for the Vatican, since the Pope hoped it could affect the extraction of residents from their factories and basements.
Even Ukraine has consistently asked Russia to create corridors for civilians, who are currently in difficult water-free and energy conditions, as well as at risk of attacks.
