On April 25th, it will thank Kosovo for housing for Afghans and Ukrainians, will encourage work on reforms for democratic consolidation and integration into European and Euro-Atlantic institutions, and will consider prospects for progress in the US-backed dialogue, facilitated by the EU with Serbia towards an agreement on normalised relations focused on mutual recognition. ”, said in communiqué.
This is the State Department's full announcement of Donfried's visit to the Western Balkans:
Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Dr. Karen Donfried will travel to the Western Balkans from 25 April to 29 April, with stops in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, northern Macedonia and Serbia.
On 25 April, it will thank Kosovo for housing for Afghans and Ukrainians, encourage work on reforms for democratic consolidation and integration into European and Euro-Atlantic institutions, and review prospects for progress in the US-backed dialogue, facilitated by the EU with Serbia towards an agreement on normalised relations focused on mutual recognition.
It will travel to Serbia on April 26th to urge Serbia to advance reforms for its European integration, improve regional stability and prosperity, discuss opportunities for further diversification of energy, and enhance our mutual economic security and ties. It will reiterate the need for Serbia and Kosovo to re-age in a relaxed dialogue by the EU.
On April 27th, in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Dr. Donfried will encourage officials to resume institutional participation at all levels of governance to advance functionality and reasonable reforms for greater prosperity and for BiH to receive EU candidate status. It will require BiH to hold autumn elections in time and make progress in the fight against political corruption.
In northern Macedonia on April 28th, she will meet with government leaders to signal our strong support for the North Macedonia membership negotiations in the EU and to thank them for their continued assistance to Ukraine. It will encourage the newest NATO member to continue close co-operation on a range of regional, security and defence issues to promote regional democracy and stability.
On April 28th, it will commemorate the 100th anniversary of US-Albania diplomatic relations and thank Albania for our partnership with the UN Security Council and for its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian aggression. It will also underline our strong support for Albania's EU membership and regional economic integration, as well as highlight the need to fully implement reform in justice and fight corruption.
Dr. Donfried will travel to Montenegro on April 29th, where he will stress US support and the need to accelerate work on Montenegro's Euro-Atlantic path and EU accession, strengthen NATO membership and support common values, including tackling corruption. It will also thank Montenegro for joining EU sanctions on Russia in supporting Ukraine, providing humanitarian and security aid, as well as for closing its airspace to Russian aircraft.
