The Scandinavian state could join the transatlantic alliance despite warnings of “military and political consequences” from the Kremlin.
Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said this weekend: “Whether joining or not joining NATO are solutions that have consequences of”.
“We must assess the short-term and long-term consequences. At the same time, we should have in mind our goal: ensuring Finland and Finnish in all situations”, Marin said.
She also said Finland's relations with its neighbour, Russia, have changed irreversibly after the attack in Ukraine, and that “it takes a lot of time and a lot of work to restore confidence”
Finland shares a border of 1,340km with Russia, the longest border from a European Union member state.
It has remained militarily unbounded, as such as non-participatory in war or conflict, since the end of the Cold War due to fears of provoking Moscow.
This weekend, Finland's Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto, said Russia's actions in Ukraine have completely changed Finland's security situation” and that Finland “should be prepared for military scenarios even more negative”.
