US support for Montenegro's integration into the European Union was what Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Karen Donfried in Podgorica stressed after visiting several Western Balkan countries.
Donfried met with new Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic, who urged him to move forward together, with conviction on the path to democratisation of Montenegrin society and reforms needed for EU integration.
Abazovic underlined the strong pro-European orientation of his government, under which it is focused on the foundations of the rule of law and regional co-operation, writes ATSH-Ansa,
Donfreed also underlined the importance of meeting the obligations resulting from the Balkan nation's NATO affiliation and to press on with the fight against corruption and crime.
Montenegro joined NATO in 2017, despite strong opposition from Russia, and has been committed for several years to EU membership negotiations.
The US” United States strongly supports the Euro-Atlantic route of six Western Balkan countries”, Donfried stressed.
