Albania suffered the strongest population decline in its history known during 2021, while the death toll rose dramatically and the birth rate declined. But the decline was largely caused by the decision of over 42,000 Albanians to emigrate.
Statistics Institute data released on Friday suggests that on January 1st of this year, the resident population results to be less than 2.8 million people, down 1.3% from the population's assessment on January 1, 2021.

The total population decline of 1.3% is just one of the alarming indicators of the country's overall situation. The decline of the young population as a result of migration and the growing elderly population, as well as the growth of average population age, are other indicators. According to INSTAT data, the average population age reached 38.2 in 2021 from 37.6 years of age in 2020.
